In this example, most of the key fields (100, 245, 260) all match exactly. However, both the 008[23] and 300 $a & $c differ. Backstage strongly recommends '''against''' including the 300 $a or $c in any verification, as the discrepancies between records may potentially rule many valid matches. With the 008[23], though, this is a potentially good value to consider in order to specifically rule out false-positive matches between regular and large print type records.

Dedupe 2.5: Group 1 - 008 Position 23 (Verify)

D2-5.png

008 position 23 -- Form of item

This fixed field position indicates the form of the catalogued item. It can include:

_ - (blank) none of the following
a - microfilm
b - microfiche
c - microopaque / microcard
d - large print
f - braille
r - regular print reproduction (eye-readable print: photcopy, xerox, facsimile)
s - electronic
/ - (pipe) no attempt to code

Choosing to verify on the 008 position 23 allows for stricter matching parameters, especially in cases where the collection contains large print and electronic data.

 Record A:
   008 081212s2008 nyu d 000 1 eng d
   100 $a Roberts, Nora.
245 $a The pagan stone /$c Nora Roberts.
   260 $a New York :$b Jove Books, $c 2008.
   300 $a 569 p. (large print) ;$c 22 cm.

 Record B:
   008 081117s2008 nyu _ 000 1 eng d
   100 $a Roberts, Nora.
245 $a The pagan stone /$c Nora Roberts.
   260 $a New York :$b Jove Books, $c 2008.
   300 $a 322 p. ;$c 18 cm.

In this example, most of the key fields (100, 245, 260) all match exactly. However, both the 008[23] and 300 $a & $c differ. Backstage strongly recommends against including the 300 $a or $c in any verification, as the discrepancies between records may potentially rule out many valid matches. With the 008[23], though, this is a potentially good value to consider in order to specifically not attempt false-positive matches between regular and large print type records.
