MARS 2.0 also utilizes an RDF-derived list of relator terms from the [http://metadataregistry.org/schemaprop/list/schema_id/4.html Open Metadata Registry]. At the time of this update, there are over 460 unique terms that MARS 2.0 utilizes to check your relator terms. If any do not appear on this list, they are flagged for one of our reports (R119). In addition to this, Backstage also employs common typo lists to check and correct for errors (e.g., 'astor' corrected to 'actor').

RDA 5.5: Relator Terms

Rda5-5.png

Relator terms

In AACR2, many relator terms were not included on headings. With RDA, the relator terms are retained and expanded if they are in their abbreviated form. MARS 2.0 will retain all relator terms in X00 $e, X10 $e, and X11 $j (unless otherwise directed). RDA 18.5.1.3 (html) MARC relators (html)

The following relator term abbreviations will be expanded:

Abbreviated Expanded Abbreviated Expanded
arr. arranger of music joint tr. translator
auth. author joint trans. translator
comp. compiler jt.
ed. editor jt. auth. author
edit. editor jt. comp. compiler
eds. editor jt. ed. editor
edt. editor jt. ill. illustrator
ill. illustrator jt. illus. illustrator
illus. illustrator jt. tr. translator
joint auth. author jt. trans. translator
joint comp. compiler lbt librettist
joint ed. editor pub publisher
joint ill. illustrator publ publisher
joint illus. illustrator tr. translator
trans. translator

There are some terms that differ between RDA-based terms and the LC/MARC relator terms. We default to using the RDA terms, but do let us know if you prefer the MARC relator term:

LC/MARC Relator RDA Relator
arranger arranger of music
cinematographer director of photography
colorist colourist
dedicatee dedicatee (item)
honoree honouree
onscreen presenter on-screen presenter
owner current owner
sponsor sponsoring body
teacher instructor

Open Metadata Registry

MARS 2.0 also utilizes an RDF-derived list of relator terms from the Open Metadata Registry as well as the Relator Term List. At the time of this update, there are over 460 unique terms that MARS 2.0 utilizes to check your relator terms. If any relator terms do not appear on this list, they are flagged for one of our standard reports (R119). In addition to this, Backstage also employs common typo lists to check and correct for errors (e.g., 'astor' corrected to 'actor').

Convert $e term to $4 code

MARS 2.0 processing can convert your $e relator terms to $4 relator codes, provided there is a match against our extensive list of available relator terms:

 original headings:
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e actor
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e director
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e politician

 updated headings:
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $4 act
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $4 drt
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930-

Note that $e politician is not a currently acceptable $e relator term. MARS 2.0 processing will flag this unrecognized relator term and add it to a standard report (see Step 6.2, R119).

Convert $4 code to $e term

MARS 2.0 processing can also convert $4 relator codes to $e relator terms:

 original headings:
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $4 act
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $4 drt
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $4 pro

 updated headings:
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e actor
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e director
   100 $a Eastwood, Clint, $d 1930- $e producer

Special Note

(1) PCC guidelines do not currently recommend using a relator term in $e in conjunction with a relator code in $4, within the same field. Backstage offers this as an option should you wish to pursue it.

(2) In the 700 and 710 fields that have a $t, we will remove any occurring $e. In the 711 field that has a $t, we will remove any occurring $j.

Default

Expand relator term abbreviations in X00 $e, X10 $e, and X11 $j fields.
